John Matthews, M.D. is an experienced eye surgeon specializing in conditions affecting the retina and vitreous humor, including age-related macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy, retinal detachment, and macular holes.

John Matthews, M.D. is an experienced eye surgeon specializing in conditions affecting the retina and vitreous humor, including age-related macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy, retinal detachment, and macular holes.  He received his medical degree from the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston, South Carolina in 1979. He completed his internship in 1980 at Roanoke Memorial Hospital. His residency in Ophthalmology was at the Medical College of Virginia in Richmond from 1980 through 1983. His two years of fellowship in Vitreoretinal surgery and ophthalmic research was at Harvard Medical School with The Retina Associates in Boston, Massachusetts and the Eye Research Institute of The Retina Foundation with Dr. Charles Schepens, a pioneer in retinal detachment surgery. During his fellowship, in addition to gaining experience in retinal laser and surgery, he participated in the N.I.H. study: the Early Treatment Diabetic Retinopathy Study.

Dr. Matthews has been certified by the American Board of Ophthalmology since 1983. He is a Member of the American Academy of Ophthalmology, The Schepens' International Retina Society, The International College of Surgeons, The North Carolina Medical Society, The Greater Greensboro Society of Medicine, The Vitreous Society and several other organizations. He keeps up to date with the latest research on retina and vitreous conditions and treatments, and has presented at local and national meetings.  He was selected for the U.S. News - Top Doctors 2012, a listing that identifies the nation’s best doctors.

Dr. John Matthews’ expertise as a vitreoretinal surgeon led him to open the Triad Retina and Diabetic Eye Center in Greensboro, NC in 2012. He and his wife, Carol, have three children and live in Greensboro.
